Stone Row Cottage is a Grade II listed home in the quiet village of Skinningrove on the North Yorkshire coast. Sleeping up to four guests, it’s been thoughtfully decorated to offer plenty of space and comfort for a self-catering stay by the sea. Just a few minutes’ stroll from Cattersty Sands - a beautiful, dog-friendly beach - the cottage is perfectly placed for exploring the North Yorkshire coast and moors. Stone Row is dog-friendly, with no restrictions on where your companions can go.
The Space
Stone Row has been decorated with comfort in mind. Inside, you’ll find two cosy living rooms, giving you plenty of space to relax. The first, just off the hallway, has a sofa, two armchairs, and soft neutral tones that make it an easy place to unwind. You’ll also find a big beanbag for your dog companions and blankets provided for the furniture if you’d like them to curl up on the sofa. Artwork and ornaments add character to the room and reflect Skinningrove’s history. Whether you’re watching TV (with Freesat and Netflix provided) or simply enjoying a quiet evening, it’s a space that feels homely and welcoming.
Across the hallway, the second living room doubles as a dining room, making it a versatile space for meals and downtime. There’s a dining table for family meals or board games, and a comfy sofa for reading or relaxing. The games cupboard is well stocked with options for both children and adults, and you’ll also find a varied selection of books to enjoy during your stay. If you start a novel and don’t get to finish it, you’re welcome to take it home with you. A basket of blankets is on hand too, perfect for getting extra snug.
The kitchen has a modern shaker style with navy cabinets and light coloured worktops, making it a bright space to cook. It’s fully equipped with everything you’ll need for a self-catering stay, from everyday essentials to the little extras that make things easier. You’ll also find a welcome supply of tea, coffee and sugar to get you started, along with condiments such as salt, pepper and cooking oil, plus washing up liquid, hand soap, a tea towel and a washing up sponge - so you can settle straight in without worrying about the small things. There’s also a good selection of crockery and glassware for your meals and drinks.
On the ground floor there’s a separate shower room with a walk-in shower, WC and wash basin. Having an extra bathroom downstairs is a real bonus, especially for families or after a day at the beach.
Guests often tell us they have a really good night’s sleep at Stone Row Cottage. Both bedrooms are extra spacious and relaxing, with a total of eight pillows provided (two of which are extra supportive).
Set up with a super king-size bed for a really comfortable night’s sleep, this room can also be split into two full-sized singles upon request before your stay - ideal for families or friends travelling together. The room includes a chest of drawers, an armchair, and a hanging rail for your clothes, plus a full-length mirror, bedside tables and lamps, as well as USB sockets for charging. Bedding is provided along with four pillows. You’ll also find a blanket for your dog companions, and an extra blanket for guests is stored in the chest of drawers if needed.
The second bedroom has a comfortable king-size bed with bedding and four pillows. There is a dressing table with a large mirror and chair, a hair dryer, bedside tables and lamps with dimmer switches. A travel cot with mattress and sheet is also stored in this room and can be set up before your stay upon request. Just like the first bedroom, you’ll also find a chest of drawers, a hanging rail, a blanket for your dog companions, and an extra blanket for guests if needed.
The bathroom at Stone Row is larger than average and designed as a relaxing space to unwind. As well as a WC and wash basin, it features a deep roll-top bath with a handheld shower - perfect for a long soak after a day at the beach or walking the Cleveland Way. Dark blue panelling contrasts with fresh white walls and silver fittings, giving the room a classic yet calming and luxurious feel. We provide a bath towel and hand towel for each guest, as well as a bath mat.
Outside, Stone Row has a pretty, private courtyard with high walls and a lockable gate, ideal for keeping bikes out of sight. There’s a dining table for meals outdoors, along with separate seating and a bistro style table for relaxing morning coffee. Just beyond the gate, you’ll find a secure grassed area shared with our lovely neighbour.
Neighborhood
Skinningrove is a small, quiet and friendly fishing village with a rich mining history. But Skinningrove’s best secret is Cattersty Sands, a beautiful golden beach, dog-friendly all year round and less than a five-minute easy stroll from Stone Row Cottage. Secluded and unspoilt, with easy access and no steps or steep slopes, it’s a peaceful spot to go for a stroll and breathe in the sea air.
The Cleveland Way coastal path also runs right through Skinningrove, with stunning walks on the doorstep. You can head north towards Saltburn-by-the-Sea or south towards Staithes, both offering incredible sea views and cliff-top scenery. If you walk the coastal path to Saltburn-by-the-Sea, you can always hop on the bus back to the village.
Getting Around
There’s so much to explore from Stone Row. Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Staithes are both less than 15 minutes away, while Whitby is just half an hour’s drive. You’ll also find heritage train stations at Goathland and Grosmont, and picture-perfect villages including Runswick Bay, Staithes, Robin Hood’s Bay, Lealholm and Glaisdale - all surrounded by dramatic coastline and moorland scenery.
That’s what makes Stone Row in Skinningrove perfectly situated - whether you’re staying local or heading farther afield, the breathtaking North York Moors National Park are only a 10-minute drive away.
In Skinningrove itself you’ll find a traditional fish and chip shop and KasKane, a friendly, dog-friendly bar/restaurant (booking advised) just a short walk from the cottage, along with the Land of Iron, an educational and immersive museum giving a fascinating glimpse into the village’s mining heritage.
Just a 5-minute drive away, the nearby town of Loftus has a Co-op, Morrisons and several takeaways for all your everyday needs. For more choice, Saltburn-by-the-Sea - a Victorian seaside town with independent shops, cafés, restaurants, a long pier and its historic cliff lift - and the pretty fishing village of Staithes, with winding streets, art galleries, harbourside pubs and heaps of coastal charm - are both less than a 15-minute drive away.
The nearest train station is located in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, where there are direct routes to Middlesbrough, York, Leeds and Manchester.
Regular buses run from Skinningrove into Saltburn, Whitby and Redcar. There is a good local bus service for those not bringing a car, though most guests find having a car helpful for exploring the coast and moors.

We have stayed before with my son. We have had another lovely holiday here at this beautiful cottage in Skinningrove. We love coming here, the cottage is very comfortable and brilliant for the dogs too. The cottage was clean , tidy and the extras were very much appreciated. Thank you. Nothing

Really comfortable beds, proximity to harbour and beach. Good facilities- heating, tv. Lovely shower which fortunately was not on the main water system. The boiler was faulty so there was no hot water. We were boiling the kettle to wash up! We reported this but it wasn’t sorted during our stay. The emergency contact number just rang out which would have been extremely worrying if there had been a more serious situation. I messaged the property management at the end of our stay and didn’t receive a reply!

Loved the cottage. Catered for the whole family. Dog friendly accomodation. Courtyard was a real bonus for children to play.. dog to chase his ball and get all those sandy towels hung out. Good weather allowed us to eat out there as well. The cottage is homely and welcoming. Beds are so comfy. It's easy to feel at home there and safe. Neighbours are friendly. Parking is easy. Beach within five minutes is a gem and you really should take the time to have a walk around the local area. We thought it was a great base and loved visiting Saltburn and the Owl Centre which we would recommend if you have small children. Weeds need removing from the front garden and the bush needs trimming in the courtyard. Bedroom window didn't close You need more than one tea towel This is really critical and did not affect my stay.

Lovely cottage in a great location. Spacious and well equipped. Well presented and clean. We had a problem with the hot water which a previous guest also mentioned. Hopefully that gets properly sorted now.

The photos of the property looked amazing ! Our photos tell an entirely different story .. the house needs a deep clean .. the back yard needs sweeping and cutting back of foliage and metal furniture painting

We booked this cottage for two nights with our 2 children (3 and 5). It was perfect for what we wanted and as soon as we walked in we were impressed. The location was perfect - a few minutes walk to a stunning sandy beach which even the little ones managed. A lovely walk along the cliff side to saltburn and then we got the bus back along the main road and walked 5 mins back down to the cottage. The roll top bath was a lovely way to finish the day after a long walk. The courtyard was also useful with two young children as it is fully enclosed and away from the road. We enjoyed breakfast in this sun trap each morning! I would return again as I think this location is really good as a base to explore the east coast.

We loved the good location. The beach was amazing. The property was so calming and peaceful. There wasn't anything I didn't like about the property.

Family of 4 visit. Beautifully decorated cottage, comfy beds, clean and cosy, quiet at night for a good nights sleep. Everything you could need, aside from a washing machine! Location wasn’t as pretty as photos suggest, quite run down. No amenities at all within walking distance. Towels smelled strongly of cigarette smoke.

An absolute gem, as soon as walked through the door, we felt right at home. Lovely and warm, the decor and furnishings were just perfect. The kitchen was spotless, both the bathrooms were exceptional and the bedrooms were just amazing. Two bedrooms with absolutely huge beds that were really comfortable. We will definitely be staying there again.

This was our 3rd time staying here and we will definitely be returning. The cottage is lovely and cosy, equipped with lots of board games and books. Beds are comfortable, heating and hot water is great. There's a shamed back garden space which is fenced off and is a great location to play with the dog. And it's located right by the beach what could be better. Thanks again for a great stay.

A cosy and lovely cottage in a brilliant location, three minutes walk from the beach in the quiet community of Skinningrove. We ate yummy fish and chips from the chippy in Skinningrove, walked the stunning coastal path to Saltburn (about 90mins), lunch at Coco and Rum in Saltburn, then a walk on Blakey Ridge on our way home to West Yorkshire. Thanks for a fantastic weekend. What a lovely cottage. X

Very spacious rooms, a comfortable home from home. Beautiful beaches less than 5 minutes walk. We visited the local village hall for breakfast and it was lovely. Locals were extremely friendly and loved to stop and chat to the pup. Blankets and food bowls provided for the dog and a lovely closed off courtyard for him to be free. The beds were so comfy and provided a well needed place to rest after a busy day walking. No washing machine available (although I'm not sure where it would go?) Could have done with another cleaning sponge and tea towel but nothing major. Didn't get the check in details until I called the host and stay company when we were outside the property and had to wait a while for them to check our details before they were sent through.

Beautiful beach and clean facilities in house

Host and stay did not properly check messages sent to them. I had to check issues several times before the holiday to make sure that they had understood what I was asking - it was a good job I did. Our booking was not updated to include a change in number of guests as we had been told it had been and we were given the wrong information about other requests. Whilst always polite and prompt the attention to detail was definitely missing. The cottage was lovely, however, and spotlessly clean.

Beautiful property, clean, well presented. Plenty living space. Very comfy beds. Peaceful private patio area Enclosed. Very short walk to the beautiful skinningrove beach. Thanks

We had the most relaxing weekend using this place as our base to travel to north coast. Super cosy to come back to

Lovely stay close to the sea front. Great for walking the dog. House was lovely and tidy.

Great to be so close to the beach, but not much else to do in the village. Found fossils on the beach. Everything you need in the cottage, comfy beds. Very dog friendly, only 3 minute walk to the beach.

Overall a lovely cottage stay with some cosy/ quirky touches. Felt very cosy inside. However when charging a cleaning fee at this price, cleanliness should be up to a satisfactory standard. On arrival it was clear the drainer had definitely had its use, (just replace it) also air fryer still had the remains of the previous guests tea, would have expected this to be ready for fresh guests usage, very off putting! The place mats were left tea stained, literally a two minute job to just wipe when so obvious! Finally the splash-backs of toothpaste on the bathroom mirror unit, again so noticeable. Although these weren’t major concerns it is frustrating paying a cleaning fee when on arrival the place wasn’t even up to my own home standards. Slightly disappointing. The bed was so comfortable and such a cosy living area, which we were thankful for as even a walk to the local pub put made us feel uneasy walking the streets after experiencing some fairly odd characters!

Absolutely beautiful cottage - much bigger than the photos make it look! Lovely electric fire in the lounge. Extremely dog friendly. Well equipped kitchen. Comfy and big beds! The surroundings are beautiful - beach only 3mins walk away. So peaceful, unspoilt and not at all crowded. Very quiet village. Not surrounded by a lot of pubs/restaurants but we didn’t want that!

We enjoyed our stay at Stone Row, which was in a beautiful location. It was great having a number of living spaces to relax in. The kitchen was well equipped. The bath was huge!

Great place to stay. Good value, easy walk to the beach. There were two parking permits (parking near the property could have been difficult otherwise) Property was warm and cosy. Good children's facilities (highchair and crockery)

Enjoyed our stay with the dogs. Easy access to beach. Very clear instructions highly recommend

A lovely cottage finished to a very high standard, skiningrove however is a very odd place & the walk down to the beach is a little daunting and wouldn’t want to do it in the dark! The beach however is lovely (avoid the copious amounts of dog mess!) We would stay again as the cottage is so lovely & very well equipped but the area isn’t great.
